More than 200 people who have accused former Vice President Joe Biden of sexual harassment have signed an open letter demanding an investigation into his actions.
Biden’s attorney said Friday that Biden had been cleared of any wrongdoing and called the allegations “false and without merit.”
“Vice President Biden has never engaged in any conduct that would warrant any type of criminal prosecution,” Brian Fallon said in a statement.
“The allegations against him are completely false and without legal merit.
The allegations against Vice President Biden are nothing more than a political smear campaign designed to tarnish his reputation and prevent him from serving as president of the United States.”
The signatories include former aides to Biden and his wife Jill, as well as former aides and aides of the Clintons, former White House counsel and Democratic Party strategist Donna Brazile and former White National Committee chairman Donna Braziles.
The letter comes amid mounting criticism of Biden’s conduct during his time in office, including reports that he sent sexual-harassment reports to his office and that he had made inappropriate advances toward several women.
A CNN report on Thursday quoted a former staffer as saying that Biden pressured her to sleep with him, and the White House has denied the allegations.
The signers also claim that Biden’s office failed to investigate claims against him and that the former vice president used the power of his office to protect his personal business interests.
Brunswick’s statement comes after the House Ethics Committee announced that it would investigate Biden’s activities.
The House Ethics panel will also review whether Biden violated his duty of loyalty, the panel said in the announcement.
Buckley’s office said in March that Biden and the vice president had “agreed to a plan to have their relationship terminated and a joint investigation into the allegations conducted by the House Office of Compliance.”
Biden, in a letter to the panel, also accused the committee of “dismissing” the case because of the lack of evidence.
